Budget Recommendations Made to JFAC
Week two of the 2019 Legislative session is now in the books. The Joint Finance and Appropriations Committee (JFAC) is in full swing, and we are hearing agency budget requests in preparation of setting budgets in the months ahead. After hearing from several economists and industry experts, the Economic Outlook Committee made its recommendation to JFAC regarding expected State revenues for the next few years. I am proud to serve on this committee, and I value my fellow committee members as we work diligently to ensure a smart and conservative process to allocate our taxpayers’ money. We are committed to finding the most cost effective approach - there is no room for wasteful spending.
On Thursday the State’s Office of Performance Evaluations issued a report, at the request of the Legislature, about the operations of the Southwest Idaho Treatment Center (SWITC) in Nampa. SWITC is a residential behavior health treatment facility that cares for a small population of Idahoans. The report was very critical of management and the performance of SWITC staff over the last several years. While the information in this report is not new, the residents, the stakeholders and people of Nampa deserve better. I will be sure to keep you updated as we work with others to identify and implement solutions to fix the problems.
There is some great work being done at the Idaho Capitol and I look forward to keeping you informed with some of the highlights from this legislative session.
